How to Redesign Your Website Without Losing SEO Rankings

How to Redesign Your Website Without Losing SEO Rankings

Redirects, URL mapping, and staging discipline — what marketing teams should insist on before switching designs.

A fresh design should not wipe out years of organic traffic. Most ranking drops after redesigns come from broken URLs, removed service pages, or slower mobile performance — all preventable.

Map every URL before you build

Export your current sitemap and Search Console coverage. For each old URL, decide: keep, redirect 301, or merge content. Never leave high-traffic pages returning 404.

Stage, measure, then switch DNS

Run Lighthouse on staging. Compare title tags and H1 structure to the old site. Launch during a low-traffic window and monitor Search Console for two weeks.

Keep location pages

If you rank for city + service queries, do not collapse ten landings into one paragraph. Consolidate only where content truly duplicates.
